2 WHY ARE WE HERE To keep children safe around our schools What we will be discussing –Driving safely in and around Schools –Bicycle safety –Pedestrian safety

3 Law Enforcement’s Role Education –Working in partnership with the community Making sure that parents and children are educated on the suggested routes to school Enforcement –Issuing citations for vehicle code violations in and around school locations Engineering –Working in partnership with Public Works Ensuring the streets are engineered properly and signs are properly posted

6 What is a Pedestrian Someone walking! –Yes Skateboarder? –Yes Rollerblader/Rollerskater? –Yes Hoverboarder? –Yes! Both Skateboarder and rollerblader/rollerskater are required to wear helmets

7 Crosswalks Marked Crosswalk Unmarked Crosswalk

8 Controlled Intersections When a crosswalk is controlled by a pedestrian signal, you may ONLY enter the crosswalk when is displayed You may NOT enter a crosswalk when this is displayed, even if the light is green* *Solid lights are for vehicles, NOT pedestrians If is flashing with or without a countdown, you may think you can make it across in time, but it is illegal to enter

10 Bicycle Safety Riding on sidewalks –It is legal to ride on the sidewalk * –Must ride in the same direction as vehicular traffic –Must stop and look for traffic before entering onto street  In Irvine, bicyclist must yield to any traffic already traveling on the roadway –Must give the right of way to pedestrians on sidewalk –Safest to get off of bike and walk across street –Helmet required for anyone under age of 18 yrs old * This law changes from city to city

13 Driving at Crosswalks Must wait for crossing guard to be back onto the sidewalk before entering the intersection Must wait for pedestrians to be in an area of safety if no crossing guard controlling the intersection Do not stop over or block a crosswalk, even if there are no pedestrians present
