2.  Read with a purpose ◦ Finding the main idea of the reading ◦ Looking for supporting details (evidence)  Make connections ◦ Their own experiences ◦ Their previous knowledge ◦ What they’re learning in other classes  Ask questions as they read

3.  Annotating is way of actively reading.  The reader marks the text in a way that is meaningful to him or her.  No two people will annotate the same text the same way.  The key is to develop your own system for annotating a text.

4.  Maintains focus  Creates interest  Helps with comprehension (understanding) and retaining (remembering) the information  Makes it easier to study the information

6.  Read a section before annotating so that you know what information is really important.  Annotate section by section.

7.  Paraphrase/summarize in the margins  Write comments and connections in the margins  Underline main ideas or draw stars next to them  Number supporting details  Put brackets around “signal phrases” (first, also, in addition, next, finally, etc.)—They’re often used to introduce supporting details.  Define unfamiliar words  Label examples (ex.) and summaries (sum.)  Write a question mark next to anything you don’t understand  Draw arrows or diagrams

8.  Just key phrases (important content words)  Less is more! Be selective.  Don’t highlight entire sentences and definitely don’t highlight entire paragraphs!

Self-disclosure is a special type of conversation in which we share intimate information and feelings with another person. There are many reasons why we disclose personal information to another person. One is simply to express our feelings—to “get them off our chest.” After a hard day at work, we may eagerly tell a friend just how angry we are at our boss and how unappreciated we feel. A second reason for self-disclosure is to gain greater understanding and self-awareness. Talking to a friend about a problem can help us to clarify our thoughts about the situation. Social approval is another reason for disclosing information. By seeing how a listener reacts to what we say, we get information about the appropriateness of our views. A final reason for self-disclosure is relationship development. The sharing of personal information is an important way to begin a relationship and to move toward increasing levels of intimacy.
