Teacher’s Survival Guide To Teaching Art Concepts to Lower Elementary Students

Madyln Instruction Plan Following along with the current unit and create a lesson plan that incorporates art. Create an objective for the concept that you want the students to obtain Create a procedure that is easy for the students to understand and follow Model an example for the students as a group to allow them to get a better understanding on what they will be doing. Guided practice should take place by allowing the children to give the assignment a try. Formative assessment would be beneficial while the children are working on their art assignment Allow the children independent practice At the end of the unit summative assessment

Introduction Children construct knowledge rather than absorb knowledge. It is important to have hands on activities that allow children to be creative Steer away from pre-constructed activities such as worksheets. Incorporate art into different subjects such as math and science. Remember that art has many different forms such as music and visual arts.

Chunking Chunk the information to help them understand that art can be incorporated into other subjects and aspects of life It is important to incorporate art in different aspects of the classroom Incorporate the students artwork throughout the classroom. Encourage the students parents to incorporate their child’s artwork throughout their home.

Activities for all Students to Grow and Learn Adapt art projects for students who are left handed. Make sure to have left handed scissors and other supplies that may be needed. Have an adaptation ready for art projects for students who are special needs. Display artwork at eye level to the children Make sure that there are enough materials for all students

Children should be given the opportunity to explore and given free range to express themselves through their art work and be less teacher lead. Provide different examples of art and different materials that can be used in art. For example use different objects to paint with rather than just a paint brush. Be Creative!

Constructivism The brain creates knowledge through exposure to new information by observations and experiences. In art make sure the instructions are teacher lead but the project should be student lead. This allows the students to create their own experiences and observations about what they are doing and creating.

Don’t Mind the Mess! Be prepared for the mess! You will most likely have to spend a few minutes cleaning up but the messier the project it seems the more fun that they have!

Assessment Assessment for art can be done as informal. By observing the children while working on their assignment would provide indicators whether the child understood the directions of the art project and then assessment should be give upon completion.
