1 Back to School Night 2010 Mrs. Koontz’s Class Procedures

2 Experience 20 years Shawnee Mission

3 Assignments I make students take home all the homework for that evening so parents can see and sign planner All work is due each morning by 8:20

4 Late work Students will have the opportunity to work on late work during recess at our study hall Late work for all 5 th grade teachers will be deducted 10% If work is not turned in by the following Monday, the assignment will be scored as a 0%

5 Planners Used for parent/teacher communication (I look every day) Lists all homework for the day Notifies parents of late work or other important information(circled) Students want stars in their planners. A star means all work was in, and the planner was signed.

6 Homework District policy: 10 minutes per grade level Fifth grade=50 minutes

7 Tuesday Folders Recording of all grades from the prior week Missing grade means either work was never turned in or student was absent Need to be signed by parent and returned on each Wednesday Great way for students and parents to to keep track of progress

8 CTI’s Correct to improve A grade of D (69%-60%) or F (59%) or lower can be corrected Not applicable to late work scored as 0% All incorrect problems must be fixed in order to receive credit Extremely low F’s can be raised to a 65% All corrections are due each Thursday…no later Applies to 1 st and 2 nd quarter only

9 Absences Students are responsible for seeing me for make-up work If HW is going to be picked up, call before lunch This includes band and strings

12 Reading Log Encourages reading fluency, comprehension, and interest 1 hour of reading each week Due every Monday for reading grade

13 Communication Big believer in parent/teacher communication Ways you will receive communication: –Planners –Tuesday Folders –Email –Phone –Conferences –Report cards

14 Birthdays Treats okay! 25 students Quick and easy to pass out and clean up Half birthday celebrations welcome

15 Field Trips Ernie Miller Park—Fall American Heroes District Assembly—February One room school house—Spring

16 American Heroes Begins in November and ends in December Timeline:change –November: book report done at home -- December : research internet and encyclopedia on hero done at school –January: dolls done at home

17 Science Solar Hot Dog Cooker in May

18 Friday Tests 2 math tests (one computation and one problem solving) Vocabulary Spelling

19 Band and Strings Band and Strings are Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00-9:30 Students responsible for making up missed class assignments
