11. Hurricane Katrina, USA, 2005 The first photo, taken by Dave Martin, an Associated Press photographer in New Orleans, shows a young black man wading through water that has risen to his chest. He is clutching a case of soda and pulling a floating bag. The caption says he has just been “looting a grocery store”. The second photo, also from New Orleans, was taken by Chris Graythen. It shows a white couple up to their chests in the same murky water. The woman is holding some bags of food. This caption says they are shown "after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store." What does this tell us about media representations of ethnicity?

14. Media representations of ethnic minorities 1. In the 1950s, 60s and 70s black people were either absent or under-represented in the media. If they were included, they were presented according to negative stereotypes, e.g. as criminals or in narrow roles such as dancers, singers and sports people. 2. Furthermore, at the time, news reporting tended to present ‘race’ issues in a negative and unbalanced way. For example, when reporting about countries in Africa or Asia news tended to focus on famine, poverty and war, while reports on ethnic minorities in Britain tended to focus on crime and riots. 3. Some argue that there have been changes in representations of ethnic minorities in the media since the 1990s. Abercrombie argues that since then there have been more ethnic minority actors and presenters and that ethnic minority characters are now ordinary rather than being based on stereotypes. The Cosby Show was particularly influential in this as all the main characters were black and successful. 4. However, others argue that the media still represents ethnic minorities according to stereotypes. Bagguley and Hussain argue that the media representations of Asian people focus on forced marriage, crime and refusal to integrate into British society. For example, in their reporting of Bradford riots in 2001, the media focused on ‘Asian youths bricking the police’ and ignored the causes of the riots.
