2 Health Trends  In 1990, 10.0% of teens were overweight  Today, 22.0% of teens are overweight Why? *Sedentary lifestyle *Technology *Increase in convenience foods *Increase in meals eaten out *Portion sizes have increased *What else??

3 Body Weight  Determined by: *height, heredity, gender, level of activity, energy intake and body composition  Healthy weight is the weight that does not present any health risks.

4 Activity Level & Body Composition  Energy balance…calories in must equal calories out or else weight is gained or lost  One pound of fat = 3500 calories  Body composition…lean body mass vs. body fat  Lean body mass consists of muscle, bones, and organs  Measured using calipers and underwater testing

9 Overweight & Obese  Overweight: weighing more than recommended for one’s height  Obese: BMI of 30 or higher with an excess of body fat  Health risks: –Type 2 diabetes –High blood pressure –High cholesterol –Heart disease –Stroke –Depression

10 Basal Metabolic Rate  Men: BMR = 66 + (13.7 X wt in kg) + (5 X ht in cm) - (6.8 X age in years)  Women: BMR = 655 + (9.6 X wt in kg) + (1.8 X ht in cm) - (4.7 X age in years)  Note: 1 inch = 2.54 cm. 1 kilogram = 2.2 lbs.
