Dr BJ Gallagher September 23, 2010 MATN Presentation

Objectives Define IWBs (Interactive Whiteboards) Consider care and presentation tips Develop an integration plan for the differentiated classroom Explore free resources Seek new approaches to increasing student motivation

What are IWBs? Presentation device that interfaces with a computer and data projector, creating a large computer image displayed on its surface Technology easily is integrated into a classroom addressing the needs of all learners Can accommodate multiple learning preferences

Research Bell(2002) looked at the impact of IWBs on students with and without disabilities. Discovered “statistically significant improvement in student attitudes toward both using computers in instruction and towards writing instruction.” Observed the IWB as a “kid magnet” Students intrigued by board’s features and interactivity. Eliminated both chalk dust and dry-erase marker smells “Research indicates that students respond to displays where color is employed.”

Tips for Teaching with an IWB Practice… Use the board and software before the lesson. Let students explore the board and software. Prepare Keep files where you can find them. Check colors and writing size from various points around the room. Recalibrate board each morning and afternoon. Check to make sure students can comfortably reach most of the board.

Tips for Teaching with an IWB Proceed…. Use the touch screen to navigate software not the computer. Pace yourself…technology increase efficiency Use a tool to develop higher level thinking skills not just as an add-on to your curriculum.

Points to consider when teaching with technology Keep foods and drinks away from the computer! Watch out for electrical cords. Cover as needed. Make sure students are not looking into the projector…bad for eyes. Check the projector arm…can really hurt your head Make sure you know what to use and not use on the board…especially students…pens/no pens.

More points to consider Check your lighting…natural light can be a bear and not easily visible. Avoid having your back to your students. Avoid making shadows on your IWB. Wall mounted speakers make it easiest to hear at all points around the room. Environment around the IWB is clear and easily accessible by all.

Ways to use Interactive Whiteboards in the Classroom (from the Instructional Technology Department of the Wichita Public Schools): Save lessons to present to students who were absent Create video files to teach a software application, a lesson, or as a review to be posted to the server or web. Example- How to create a graph in Excel or hoe to burn a projects to cds Use the built in maps to teach continents, oceans, countries, or states and capitals. Present presentations created by student or teacher Have students create e-folios including samples of their work and narration Digital storytelling Teach whole group computer or keyboarding skills

More ways… Brainstorming Take notes directly into PowerPoint presentations Reinforce skills by using on-line interactive web sites Creating a project calendar Teach editing skills using editing marks Use in the 6 trait writing process Use highlighter tool to highlight nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Use it with Kidspiration or Inspiration Teaching students how to navigate the Internet

Even more ways…. Illustrate and write a book as a class. Use the record feature to narrate the text. Use the Interwrite software to create lessons in advance at home or at school. Then save them for future use or to be shared with other teachers Diagramming activities Teaching steps to a math problem. Have students share projects during Parent/Teacher/Student conferences Graphics and charts with ESL learners and special education students. Teaching vocabulary Electronic Word Wall End each day by having students write one thing that they learned
