3 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Students will gain understanding of the importance of money and how it affects society. Students will integrate technology into social studies. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will learn the background knowledge of money, budgeting, savings and checking, as well as credit. Students will learn how banks affect them and their families. Process/Skills: Through the integration of technology, students will have hands on access and experience with money. Through learning content knowledge, students will process and apply the skills they learned to run their own lemonade stand. Values/Dispositions: Students will understand the value of banks and money.

4 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Rationale: Money Matters! allows students to learn the importance of our banks through economics. It is essential for our students to understand that we must work for our money, how to properly store it in a bank, and the history of our money as well. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 15.A.1b Describe how wages/salaries can be earned in exchange for work. 15.B.1 Explain why consumers must make choices. National – NCSS Themes Production, Distribution, and Consumption Individuals, Groups, and Institutions

5 Objective

6 Using the white hat delicious bookmark, students will be able to access a great website explaining background knowledge of banking, money, budgeting, savings and checking, as well as credit. Every student will need to listen and follow along while they look at each of the planets. Introduction, You & Your Money, Budgeting, Savings & Checking Guide, Credit & You. After going through each of these links, the students will take the assessment quiz provided by the website. After completion, if the student has earned a 70% or higher they are able to print a personal certificate of achievement. Objective

8 Using the red hat delicious bookmark, the students will explore the banking kids page. The website clearly explains how to make a simple budget and allows opportunity for practice. Do a classroom example before allowing the students to work on their own. After they have completed the red and green links, the students will print out their final budgets for assessment. While waiting for students to finish up they may discover what else is to offer on this website or try another budget example. Intuitive

10 Positive/Strengths Using the yellow hat delicious bookmark, the students can explore the many money games available. This resource will allow for students to understand our society’s value and benefit of understanding money. In particular, it is essential for the students to try the lunch lady and counting back games. This is very important to our world of economics. We must know how to count money and how to distribute it.

11 Negatives/Weaknesses

12 Using the black hat delicious bookmark, the students will view virtual money. As a class, we will view watermarks, serial numbers, red and blue fibers, as well as security thread. There will be discussion of what these things mean to us and why it is important for us to have. What difficulties or problems would society face if we did not have these marks? Negatives/Weaknesses

14 Creative After learning about the many concepts of banking through earlier activities, students will put their knowledge to use. Using the green hat delicious bookmark, the students will be able to access a resource that allows them to work their own business, a lemonade stand. This link gives step-by-step directions for the students. Before allowing the students to work on their own, do a classroom example first. The students will get a taste of how a business operates and how to earn income as well.

16 Using the blue hat delicious bookmark, students will read all about how and why we earn, save, spend, and give money. There are many short quizzes and games for the students to play and try out as examples. This resource allows students to understand what comes next and how their own actions are in account when using their money.

17 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Visual Learning, Assessment, and Online Resources: Assessment: White Hat: Through this online resource, the students are able to take an assessment quiz on what they learned by viewing each of the tabs. Students will print out their assessment score/certificate once they are completed. Red Hat: This resource allows for students to create their own budget. After completion, the students will print out their product for assessment. Yellow Hat: Students will be assessed by their ability to work efficiently on many of the different games online. Black Hat: The students will be assessed by their collaboration and participation in class while viewing the virtual money museum. Green Hat: Students will be assessed by their ability to work efficiently online.
