1. Art Deco A particular untraditional style of décor which become immensely popular in the 1930’s and onwards. Maddie and Kimberly.

2. Brief Introduction The Art Deco movement emerged within the early years of the 1920s, lasting roughly until the outbreak of global conflict in 1939. Although it was growing rapidly in fashion in North America and Europe, however the term Art Deco was not known until 1925. From the 1925 “Exposition Internationale des Arts Decnotifs Industriels et Modernes” held in Paris. Art Deco gathered a wide range of design elements inspired from as far as ancient Egypt. The classic Egyptian zig zag or pyramid shape is seen to be as a staple Art Deco motif. Art deco was able to portray itself emotionally with bright colors and playfulness in an age that was all about prospering. The term Art Deco is meant to celebrate every area of decorative arts, fashion, architecture, Interiors, furniture, paintings, jewelry, graphics, costume, ceramics etc.

3. Aim of the Movement In the midst of the 20 th Century a new generation was forming, one that had a different outlook on life compared to earlier years. This came in the form of Art Deco, which was attempting to keep up with the quickening pace of the world’s inventions, creating a new sense of style to suit the new extravagant lifestyle. This new modern-age was about a certain type of freedom for those within nations such as America. Allowing the time period reflected the human need for pleasure and escape.

4. Key Features Art Deco was developed in order to create a kind of ‘untraditional elegance’ that had never been seen prior to the 1920’s. Its style had notable features including simple streamline designs, which incorporated geometric stylized designs that often used expensive materials. It was shown through the various designs that were displayed throughout the 1920’s and 30’s that this new ‘modern machinery’ was appreciated by many designers, and drew on this for various features of their designs. Including : - Geometrical Designs - Combinations of Colors - Abstract Patterns The image above would have been used as a type of wallpaper during this time.

5. Architecture. Art Deco was clearly shown through many iconic buildings such as the Chrysler building, Empire State Building and Rockefeller Centre. Stainless steel body, shows an appreciation for the machinery age as displayed throughout Art Deco designs. Geometric shapes and patterns heavily influenced the design. Extravagant design, compared to the other buildings around it.

6. Furniture. Art Deco influenced various areas of design, including interior décor. It was found homes during this time period often had a lavish feel to them. Exotic materials were often used such as sharkskin or shagreen which were used in many pieces during the 1920’s – 1930’s. It still incorporated geometric designs that were seen on the exterior of buildings or clothing – placing them on the floor to create a ‘crisp’ look.

7. Tamara De Lapicka During the 1900’s, certain artists chose to have a certain exotic or glamorous style within their pieces that was influenced from the Art Deco period. This was shown through the artist, Tamara Dec Lapicka and her various works throughout her lifetime. It gave the viewer an insight to the historical events of the time, including the Roaring Twenties – a period during the 1920’s in which those within America had extravagant lives due to over spending, and indulging in various items that weren’t necessary. As shown in ‘The Man in the Black Trench coat’ certain historical events surround the image, including the influence of the Roaring Twenties (as depicted by the buildings in the background of the image and the man’s wealthy appearance).

8. Tamara De Lapicka This image shows a women who’s fashion clearly shows the influence of the Art Deco era during the Roaring 20’s. As women during this time wore their skirts above their knees to show this change in freedom compared to WW1 wear the women would wear long length dresses.
