Earning the Right To a New Beginning By Tammy Allen

Abstract The research I have collected focuses on inmates experiences within the prison facility how they are physically, mentally and emotionally dealing with their sentences. By looking at ways to prevent inmates from recidivism back into the prison system once released. The articles that were gathered were used to look at what essentials the inmates need in order to stay out of the system and how the prison facilities are preparing these men with the right resources such as educational programs, proper working skills and counseling that is needed for these released inmates to rehabilitate once placed back into society. The theory that was used within my research is specific deterrence, effect punishment on the future behavior of persons who experiences the punishment. During my research I touched on a few funded programs that supports and help rehabilitate released inmates, parolees stay grounded by working toward a positive lifestyle once released. The research that is gathered expresses the importance of the well being of the inmates and society.

Article summary Within my research I found a number of scholarly journals that focus on inmates experiences while being incarcerated and what should be done to prevent recidivism and work toward rehabilitation. The journals also touch on what and how the inmates should be prepared to be placed back into society where they have important essentials to keep them focused and out of prison.

Article Summary One of my articles touched on an important aspect of preventing recidivism is to mentally, educationally and emotionally prepare the inmates while they are incarcerated to have some sort of idea of how society is upheld outside the walls of prison. The article by Christy A. Visher and Jeremy Travis. Transitions from Prison to Community: Understanding Individual Pathways, how the parolees need the love and support in order to stay on track and who difficult it is for them to adapt to freedom once released.

Media  News  Television shows: Scared straight, locked up Boston  Newspapers: Metro, Banner, Herald  Community meetings” Stop the Violence”

Theory “Specific deterrence refers to the effect of punishment on the future behavior of persons who experiences the punishment. For specific deterrence to work, it is necessary that a previously punished person make a conscious connection between an intended criminal act and the punishment suffered as a result of similar acts committed while incarcerated.” The correctional system should be organized to maximize the pain of crime and to minimize its benefits. Its whole aim should be to scare people straight—those who have engaged in crime

Current Practices The choice program when was it started Walter S. Brook House The Delancey Foundation

Recommendations Goal is to stop the path of crime and violence from the beginning by allowing programs to help support and tech not only parolees but the community to work toward obtaining the critical essentials of providing themselves with life techniques to be able to survive and to stay away from the life of the prison system. while preventing recidivism and the revolving door theory. A program that provides great support system, that offers educational classes, activities job training, food banks, counseling, housing and clothing to the younger and older populations so that we can prevent the path to violence and crime.
