Ask your child to summarise what they have been reading- main points, full sentences, not every detail Words!- meaning, power, similarities, phonics, rhyme Punctuation- what it means, why it is used Model expression Compare with previous books and authors Compare with experiences you have had. Laugh and enjoy a book together Ask open ended questions

In what ways are the three bears like people? (analysis) 4. What do you think Goldilocks could have done to make friends with the bears? What would you do if she came in to your house? (application)

Talk about your reading Keep it a regular habit- daily or 5X per week at least Read together- even if your child is a capable independent reader Read aloud Find a comfortable, quiet place- no distraction Explain strategies- NOT always phonics! Talk about the book…Open Ended questioning Inference, Prediction Ask your child to summarise Continue to read TO your child regularly
