10. Children who have difficulty with spelling usually have no strategies up their sleeve when they get stuck on a word. Ask the question, ‘what do you do when you cannot spell a word’ and they will have, at best, one strategy... High frequency words Key stage 1 – Year 1 and 2 – sending home 5 spellings to learn per week based on an assessment At the end of the half term – retaining spellings Key stage 2 – Year 3 and 4 – high frequency words and spelling rules and patterns
