8 Helping your child with spelling.

9 Spelling Development Stage 1- Preliminary spelling Stage 2- Semi Phonetic spelling Stage 3- Phonetic spelling Stage 4- Transitional spelling Stage 5- Independent spelling

10 Children who have difficulty with spelling usually have no strategies up their sleeve when they get stuck on a word. Ask the question, ‘what do you do when you cannot spell a word’ and they will have, at best, one strategy... To help them become better spellers they need to acquire a range of different approaches to help them. Pie Corbett How you help?

15 Spellings Spelling – phonics is a key part to learning to read and spell. High frequency words Key stage 1 – Year 1 and 2 – sending home 5 spellings to learn per week based on an assessment At the end of the half term – retaining spellings Key stage 2 – Year 3 and 4 – high frequency words and spelling rules and patterns

16 Homework 5% of what they learn when they’ve learned from lecture. 10% of what they learn when they’ve learned from reading. 20% of what they learn from audio-visual. 30% of what they learn when they see a demonstration 50% of what they learn when engaged in a group discussion 75% of what they learn when they practice what they learned. 90% of what they learn when they teach someone else/use immediately..
