BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Task 7.5: High-Tc link Deliverable of Task 5 - as described in the Eucard Grant Agreement: Superconducting link, 20 m long, containing 48 HTS cables rated at 600 A- DC (M40). The Task includes design and assembly activities – but not the test of the final prototype. CERN will perform the test of the prototype link.

BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Prototype twisted-pair cables characterization (CERN and SOTON) Type-5: MgB2 Type-3: Y-123 Type-2: Bi-2223 Type-1: Bi-2223 NB The Ic in the plot refers to one single cable of the twisted pair unit  Measurement performed on twisted-pair cables made from different conductors (2 m long)  No cabling degradation observed (< 2 %)  Good homogeneity of Ic of cables in the same in the same twisted pare (  2 %) Self-field 2×4.4 kA !

14 A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Is the Task 7.5 on schedule ? Yes Assembly of prototype link: planned to be ready by Q3 2012. The cabling machines are planned to be fully commissioned by end of summer 2012, when cabling of 20 m long HTS cables will start.

BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Conclusions  The new cable concept has been validated with test of several prototype cables made from MgB 2, Y-123 and Bi-2223 conductors. Tests were made at LN 2 and LHe temperature, and in GHe in a variable temperature range  Cabling machines are being constructed for the assembly of the twisted-pair cables required for the 20 m long prototype link  The work is advancing according to schedule and the deliverable of the Task 7.5 (20 m long prototype link) is expected to ready according to original plan
