HQ TEST PLANS @ CERN by Marta Bajko CERN TE-MSC TF For Hi Lumi and LARP the 16 th of November 2011 CERN

Summary Cryogenic test station status at CERN Which cryostat we can use? Characteristics Which measurements can be done? – Electrical integrity (HiPot, Insulation, Continuity) – RRR during cool down and warm up – Splice resistance measurements – Inductance measurements – Powering test at 1.9 K and quench localization – Protection heater study if required – Ram Rate dependence study – Mechanical measurements with strain gauges – Magnetic measurements When the cold test can take place?

Cryogenic test station at CERN till 2010 A. Test station with 4 vertical cryostats for stand alone magnets located in Prevessin (building 892) B. Tests station with 10 benches in horizontal position, optimized for the main LHC magnets located in point 18 (building 2173)

Cryogenic test station at CERN from 2011 Tests station with 10 benches in horizontal position, optimized for the main LHC magnets, 3 vertical cryostats and supercritical test station located in point 18 (building 2173 called SM18)

Cryogenic test station SM18 layout Horizontal test benches Vertical test benches

With more details on the vertical cryostats OPERATIONAL !!! ….also working in conditions LHe( 4.2K and 1.9K) and He gas with accuracy of <1 K and up to 17 kA OPERATIONAL !!!First test at 13kA and 4.3K on the 11/11/11 done! Cryostat design advanced, Current lead specification should be started soon!!! We plan to fabricate a new additional insert for long cryostat to get read of “dead time” ( change of magnets, installation de-insatallation…)

The vertical cryostats characteristics Cryostat 1 (LONG) (existing in bl 4) Cryostat 2 (existing in bl 4) Cryostat 3 ( FRESCA 2 ) Cryostat 3bis (existing in bl 4) Useful length (mm)380016003400-40001400 Useful diameter (mm)6005001800800 Cooling time 4.2 K (h)44532 Cooling time 1.9 K (h)122.58 Consumption (l)7300/810011004500/5030 Consumption rate(l/h)95/1157556/80 Working temp (K)1.94.21.9 and 4.21.9 Working pressure (mbar)1250 Max weight (t)61.527-303 Max energy (kJ)Tested: 5007000 Nr of current leads 2 x 13 kA +1 x 6 kA2 x 15 kA2 x 20 kA2x 18 kA or 4x 200 A + 4 x 1200 A Nr. of available inserts1112 The LONG cryostat that we will use for the HQ test Magnet diameter 570 mm for a cryostat of 600 mm !!!

MAGNET SUSPENSION Holes for CERN Support rods from lambda plate -20 mm thru-holes on 400 mm bolt-circle (shown) -To be designed by CERN. MAGNET SUSPENSION ADAPTER PLATE (SUPPLIED BY CERN) FOUR SHORT SUSPENSION RODS (SUPPLIED BY CERN) - Distance between adapter plate and pizzabox = 149 mm. - Rod diameter = 19.05 mm - Thread length on rods allows up to 44.5 mm thick plate. 10 Which measurements we can do? – Electrical integrity (HiPot, Insulation, Continuity) – RRR during cool down and warm up – Splice resistance measurements ( up to a minimum of 1 nOhm) – Inductance measurements( with di/dt) – Powering test at 1.9 K and quench localization with V taps ( eventually also quench antenna but it represent an important extra work) – Protection heater study if required ( we need to know the time constant or the deposited energy on the heaters to set up the circuits; we have up to 400 V or lower and fixed capacitor benches with units of 14 mF) – Ram Rate dependence study ( min RR=15 A/s if Imax > 15 kA) – Mechanical measurements with strain gauges ( with the LBNL system ) – Magnetic measurements ( See details with S. Russenschuck)

When we can test? We expect the magnet at CERN end of November 2011 Eventually to be installed in the insert end of December 2011 Test at warm and instrumentation; protection set up beginning of January 2012 Cryo will start 16 th of January 2012 Magnet test start 20 th of January 2012
