4 President Lincoln Lincoln was reelected in 1864. His main goal was to preserve the Union. Unfortunately, he never got to carry out this plan. On April 14, 1865, five days after the South surrendered, Lincoln was assassinated. John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate supporter, shot him. The assassination was part of a conspiracy in an effort to rally the remaining Confederate troops to continue fighting. The conspiracy also called for the murder of Secretary of State William Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson.
