 Definition: A set is a collection of items  EXAMPLES OF SETS  a set of letters of the alphabet  A set of numbers from 1-20  A set of colours SETS

Types of sets 1. Finite sets A finite set is a set where it is possible to list all the members. 2. Infinite sets An infinite set is a set where it is impossible to list all the members of the set

SET NOTATION The symbol { } means “the set of” The set of boys names John, James and Tom { John, James Tom } The set of odd numbers from 1-10 { 1,3,5,7,9 }

Venn Diagram A Venn Diagram is a graphical representation of the elements in the set The rectangle represents the universal set denoted by: ξ, U, E U A B

A B A A B B Disjointed sets B is a subset of A Intersection of A and B B complement or B’ ξ ξ B ξ ξ B’

Labeling the parts of a set in a venn diagram A ONLY B ONLY A and B only A B U

Q1. In a class of 30 students, 17 students do Maths, 23 students do English X students do Math and English only (i) Draw a venn diagram to represent the information above. (ii) Write an equation to represent the total number of students in the class (iii) Determine the number of students who do both subjects

Labeling the parts of a set in a venn diagram M ONLY E ONLY M and E only M E U = 30 students 23 - XX 17 - X 30 = (17 – x) + x +( 23 – x)
