2. MUSCLES Muscle – Organ that contracts and relaxes (returns to regular length). As a result, body parts move. Tendon – thick bands that attach muscles to bones Over 600 muscles in our body

3. Functions of Muscular System Movement (produces heat in your body as you do work) Gives your body its shape

4. TWO KINDS OF MUSCLES Voluntary muscles – CAN control Examples: Arm, leg, neck, face Involuntary muscles – CAN’T control Examples: Heart, lungs, brain, intestines, eye lids

5. THREE TYPES OF MUSCLE TISSUE Skeletal – has striations (stripes) –most common – contract quickly –move bones (attached to bones) –voluntary (we can control) Example: Biceps and Triceps

6. * Smooth – no striations –found in internal organs –involuntary (we do not consciously control) –contract and relax slowly (ex: form the walls of the stomach and intestines, blood vessels, bladder)

7. Cardiac – has striations –the heart muscle –involuntary
