Introduction to emerging literacies Evolution of literacy Traditional literacy emerging literacies Definition of literacy is advancing what is the definition for the 21 st century? In order to embrace new forms of literacies teachers need to be open to professional development opportunities as well as given these opportunities

Media Use by Today’s Youth Spend “6.5 hours daily with media and technology, and, as a result of multitasking, they are exposed to 8 hours of media content per day (as cited in Considine, 2009, p. 65). Media’s role as a social institution (church, school, government, family) in young people’s lives. In 2006, the FCC called for a “sustained K-12 media literacy program to teach students not only how to use media but how the media uses them (Wan & Gut, 2008).” Media Literacy

Media Literacy Definition Considine (2009) describes media literacy as “the ability to access, analyze, and evaluate media messages, in addition to the ability to use media to effectively communicate.” For our purposes, media literacy will be defined as the ability to effectively analyze, interpret and create media messages. Media Literacy

Integration of Media Literacy Adding another discipline into an already crowded school day would be an extremely difficult task for any school district to accomplish. For this reason, many educators have argued that media literacy should be integrated into existing school curriculum. Media Literacy

Strategies for Integration of Media Literacy 1.TAP Framework Media Literacy

Strategies for Integration of Media Literacy 2. Three Stages of Critical Literacy Stage 1: Learn to be selective about the sources of media they encounter and learn to manage the amount of time they spend on media. Stage 2: Develop skills that enable them to analyze and evaluate media messages. Stage 3: Explore the production side of mass media. Media Literacy

Strategies for Integration of Media Literacy 3. Project Look Sharp: Offers twelve principles or guidelines for integrating media literacy into any content area. Some of the guidelines include, using media to “practice general observation, critical thinking, analysis, perspective-taking, and production skills”, to motivate interest in a new course topic, to develop an awareness of reliability and bias, and to connect students to the larger community and become agents of change. Media Literacy

Suggestions for the Future of Media Literacy Professional Development for Teachers Revision of national standards Media Literacy

Digital Literacy “The ultimate value of internet access in schools will clearly depend on the extent to which students and teachers use the internet and on the purposes for which they use it. (Huang & Russell, 2006).

Digital Literacy Essential in advancing education, culture, science, and technology Societal Level Information is instrumental in personal and professional development Individual Level

Digital Literacy Photo-Visual Literacy Skill - “using vision to think” Reproduction Literacy Skill - Create new meanings Branching Literacy – hypermedia literacy skill Information Literacy Skill – becoming smart informational consumers Socio-emotional Literacy – “understand the rules of the game”

Digital Literacy In a study of adults versus a younger population it is found that the notion that younger scholars are better than older scholars in executing tasks with digital environments in not always supported. In December 2000 more than half of households had computers (Eshet, & Amichai, 2004)

Digital Literacy 80% of kindergartners use the internet in 2005. 50% of children under 9 use the computer in 2005. 2005 95% of K-12 had access to the internet (Barone & Wright, 2008)

Digital Literacy From 2002 – 2003 – 94% of elementary classrooms have at least one computer – 89% of these classrooms have dedicated internet access (Huang & Russell, 2006).

Digital Literacy Trying to prove: – Socio-economic status does not dictate your literacy status. No computer at home -> go to school or a public library Make class time available if technology is used for assignments there are grants available

Digital Literacy RESULTS An increase in scaffolding was shown Computer use proved more efficient for writing Technology accommodates for a variety of learners

Survey of Visual Literacy

Visual Literacy Founders Matriarch of Visual Literacy Lida Cochran (1911-2007)

John Debes defines Visual Literacy as…. a group of vision-competencies a human being can develop by seeing and at the same time having and integrating other sensory experiences. The development of these competencies is fundamental to normal human learning. When developed, they enable a visually literate person to discriminate and interpret the visible actions, objects, symbols, natural or man-made, that he encounters in his environment. Through the creative use of these competencies, he is able to communicate with others. Through the appreciative use of these competencies, he is able to comprehend and enjoy the masterworks of visual communication. International Visual Literacy Association, 1969
