2 According to the Sustainable Foods Summit hold in Amsterdam on 10–11th June in 2010 the number of Eco-labels in food industry rose to 500.

3 The sales of Fairtrade certified products have been growing on an average of almost 40% per year in the last five years. In 2008, Fairtrade certified sales amounted to approximately €2.9 billion worldwide, a 22% year-to-year increase.

8 The key objectives of the standards are to: ensure that producers receive prices that cover their average costs of sustainable production; provide an additional Fairtrade Premium which can be invested in projects that enhance social, economic and environmental development; enable pre-financing for producers who require it; facilitate long-term trading partnerships and enable greater producer control over the trading process; set clear minimum and progressive criteria to ensure that the conditions of production and trade of all Fairtrade certified products are socially, economically fair and environmentally responsible.
