2 I. Strategies of War A.North 1.Primary- restore the Union 2.Three part strategy a. Capture Richmond, gain control of the Mississippi River, naval blockade of the South 3.Based on geography- split South in half B.South 1.Capture Washington and invade the North, shatter northern morale, disrupt Union communications, win European support

3 Answer the following questions How strong is the strategies of the North and the South? What are the obvious weaknesses of each plan? How might each side work to ensure their plans success? What could they use as a backup plan if their initial strategies fail?

4 II. The Military Experience A.Recruits on both sides had very little experience B.Both sides lacked supplies in beginning C.Deadly disease D.Hospitals lacked supplies E.Prisoner of War camps- worst conditions F.Boredom

5 Assignment Write at least five questions you would ask a Civil War veteran if you were a reporter and had the chance to interview one.

6 Assignment With a partner imagine that one of you is a veteran of the Union army (the other is a reporter) describe your experiences in the war. Then switch roles and the other person is now a confederate soldier.

7 III. The Home Front A.North 1.Women went to work 2.Volunteer groups- to help support troops B.South 1.Supported war effort- patriotic events to raise money 2.Blockade caused- short supply of basics

8 IV. Civilian Aid on the Battlefield A.Women aided military 1.Some dressed like men and fought 2.Some spied 3.Medical roles a.Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell- U.S. Sanitation Commission b.Clara Barton- nurses c.Sally Louisa Tompkins- hospitals and clinics- Confederate officer

9 Assignment Imagine that you are a civilian on the Union or Confederate home front or battlefield during the Civil War. Write a diary entry in which you discuss living conditions, activities in support of the war, and his or her emotions.

10 V. Opposition to the War A.Southern Opposition 1.conscription- draft necessary- draft exemptions for plantation owners 2.Short on food – soldiers pay below market value B.Northern Opposition 1.Felt too costly in money and human life 2.Draft- caused riots 3.copperheads
