2 Review: the verb ‘to be’ I am She/He/It is They/Weare

3 Present Progressive This tense is used to describe an action that is happening right now. For example, I am talking right now. Present Progressive has the following form: (be verb) + (verb+ing) Ex: I am talking to you. What are you doing right now?

4 Present Progressive What’s happening in the video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x6Y1Rad3K0 Captain Jack __________________ (stand) on the top of the ship. Captain Jack ___________________ (look) at the land ahead. Captain Jack ___________________ (throw) water back into the sea. Three dead pirates ___________________ (hang) from ropes. All the men on land ____________________ (stare) at Captain Jack. Captain Jack’s boat ___________________ (sink) into the sea. I ___________________ (watch) the beginning of Pirates of the Carribean.

5 Present Progressive: Negative I am not watching a movie right now. (be verb) +not + (verb+ing) I am not sitting on the beach right now. What aren’t you doing right now?

6 Remember: You can only use action verbs to make present progressive, and you can only talk about something you are doing right now. For example, you can’t use the following words in present progressive: Like Want Hate Trust Believe Own Sound These words are not action verbs. For these verbs you must use simple present. For a list of all the verbs you can’t use in present progressive look at pg. 5 in your book.

7 Simple Present Use this tense for events that regularly happen. Use this tense with adverbs of frequency (always, usually, sometimes, never) What do you do every day? I wake up at six. I usually eat breakfast at seven. I sometimes go for a run in the afternoon. What do you do every day?
