2 What is an idiom? a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words (e.g., rain cats and dogs, see the light ). In other words: a phrase with a special meaning other than exactly what the words say Idioms come from several references, including works of literature and common sayings from the past.

3 Example: “Hit the lights” After the PowerPoint is finished and the students leave the classroom, Mr. Saxon calls out, “Someone hit the lights!” A)Punch the light bulbs C) Press the light switch button What should the students do? When it was time to turn off the lights, a person would use a large snuffer and go around hitting each light with the snuffer. The snuffer would then extinguish the light, turning it off.
