Switching On, Switching Off. This activity is about remembering to switch lights off around your school. We need the whole school to get involved. Are you up for the challenge?

Did You Know? 63% of people forget to switch lights off when leaving a room. Lighting accounts for 14% of your home’s electricity bill. Leaving a 60W light bulb on for an hour each day uses the same amount of energy in a year as a month’s worth of evenings watching the TV would.

What types of light bulbs are there? Fluorescent. Incandescent. Energy efficient.

How many light bulbs do you think are there in the school? There is a massive…. 188 Light bulbs in our school! Just think of the electricity we are wasting if these were left on unnecessarily!!

Our Campaign We have already carried out a light audit, counting how many lights were left on or off. We are going to run the Switching On Switching Off Campaign this week. Then we will carry out a second audit to see how much the school has improved.

What do you need to do? Every time you leave the classroom empty. TURN THE LIGHTS OFF! If you are the last person in the toilets. TURN THE LIGHTS OFF! If you see the corridor is empty…. TURN THE LIGHTS OFF!

Things to Help You… We have chosen light monitors, they will be wearing special badges all week. Our job is to turn the lights off in the morning, after you have all come in to school. There are signs under the switches to remind you to turn off the lights….

Recycling Competition. The winning posters have been copied, laminated and put up near the recycling bins. Key Stage 1 Lower Key Stage 2 Upper Key Stage 2 Thank You and Well Done!

THANK YOU! We hope you will help Willand School save energy by SWITCHING OFF!

Switching On, Switching Off. How did we do?

Switching On, Switching Off. At the start of the week, we surveyed the whole school and found that a total of 111 lights were left on and 77 were switched off. How did we do this week?

Switching On, Switching Off. Yesterday, we surveyed the whole school again, and this time altogether, there were 52 lights left on and 135 lights switched off… How much money does it cost? This means that an extra 58 lights were switched switched off this week!

Switching On, Switching Off. One lightbulb costs on average… 1½ p per hour, 10p per day, 50p per week, £2.00 per month, £18.50 per year….

We saved this week…. We had an extra 58 lightbulbs switched off in this school, so IF these extra lights have been turned off the whole time, we could have saved… £0.50 x 58 = £28.00 How much COULD we save?

If we continue…. IF these 58 extra lightbulbs were switched of for only half of each school day, in one school year, we could save up to a massive….. £495.00!!
