PBCAT Upgrade - Progress and Plans State HSIS Liasons’ Meeting October 24 - 25, 2002 Chapel Hill, North Carolina

PBCAT Crash Typing Crash typing provides important information for developing appropriate countermeasures for ped and bike crashes with motor vehicles. PBCAT allows the user to quickly and easily type crashes, using the same basic concepts that have evolved from NHTSA’s original methodology, developed in the early 1970’s. The typing methodology was further refined as part of the development of the PBCAT software package.

PBCAT – Past Concept developed – 1996 âTo automate the manual methodolgy and create a tool for practitioners âBetter define ped. and bike crash problems âLinked to potential countermeasures âProvided limited report capability

PBCAT – Past Version 1.0 completed in 1999 Beta tested, final report released July 2000 â12 participants â25 crash reports (13 ped/12 bike) âConsistency among participants âDevelopment of recommendations for further versions of the software - starting point

PBCAT – Past Widely distributed - more than 600 software orders from all 50 states and 28 countries Current applications âMetroplan Orlando âPedestrian ITS Project Miami-Dade, Las Vegas, San Francisco âNC Ped/Bike Crash Query System

PBCAT – Present Version 1.0 Users Survey - likes and recommendations for improvement, May 2002 Technical Working Group - convened in Chapel Hill, June 2002 Summary of recommended enhancements and upgrades

Suggested Improvements âSoftware upgrades âUser interface enhancements âStreamlined crash typing, data customization options âIncorporation of pedestrian and bicycling countermeasure expert systems âDatabase storage, management, and networking âImprove database transfer options âEnhance report capability âProvide on-going tech support (now available)

PBCAT – Next Assess feasibility and costs of suggested improvements Detail planned upgrades Enhance the software (Beta Version - May 2003) Beta Testing

PBCAT – Next Release 2.0 (November 2003) Market and distribute the software (PBIC) Provide on-going tech support (through December 2005)

PBCAT Version 2.0 Should provide planners, engineers, and ped/bike coordinators with a greatly enhanced crash analysis tool to improve walking and bicycling safety.
