The Dean of Students Office (DOS) is committed to the enhancement of the student experience by providing services that promote the personal development and academic success of all undergraduate students. The Dean of Students Office collaborates with a number of campus constituents to maintain a positive learning environment. This is done through program support, and advising related to University policies/procedures.

3 Some things to consider:
Faculty spend a lot of time dealing with conflicts in the classroom College students have a hard time transitioning from high school and communicating their needs Conflicts arrive due to miscommunication and perceived incompatibilities Students are arriving at school less prepared to meet the daily social challenges they must face in the classroom

What are some of the differences? Time management Self advocacy Conflict resolution Communication Sharing of space – loss of privacy Helicopter syndrome

5 Conflict between Faculty and Student
Grades Special Circumstances Extensions/Deadlines Communication Mental Health factors Disability Needs

6 Examples- How do you handle this?
Students is asking for extra time on an assignment or exam Student not showing up to class but asking for class work to be given by Student out sick and asks to make up a week worth of work Students arguing about a religious holiday/cultural necessity Student is not responding to any communication and not showing up to class

Assist students to find approaches to resolving academic, financial and personal needs Student Health Services Primary Care, Health Promotion & Educational Outreach Counseling and Mental Health Services Homesickness, Depression, Therapy Groups
