2 Cell Division = Mitosis  During life, we go from one cell to ~ 75 trillion cells.  Mitosis= process of division of a somatic cell (not a sex cell)

3 Cell Division - 2 Parts I. Mitosis = cell (nuclear) division II. Cytokinesis = division of cytoplasm, formation of 2 identical cells

4 Sequence of Cell Cycle IPMAT  Interphase  Prophase  Metaphase  Anaphase  Telophase

5 Mitosis Includes :  Prophase  Metaphase  Anaphase  Telophase Cytokinesis (division of cytoplasm)

6 Cytokinesis (division of cytoplasm)  Starts during Mitosis (Telophase)  Completed after Mitosis is complete

7 During Interphase :  Normal cell f(x)s  DNA Synthesis  Duplication of organelles  DNA in form of chromatin

8 Prophase  Chromosomes coil & bcm visible Sister chromatids  Nuclear envelope disappears  Nucleolus disappears  Spindle forms Sister chromatid

9 Prophase  Spindle forms between centrioles  Nuclear envelope and nucleoli disappear

10 Prophase Prepare to divide!

11 Metaphase  Sister chromatids line up at equator of the metaphase plate spindle pole Sister chromatid

12 Metaphase Meet me in the middle, metaphase!

13 Anaphase  Centromeres divide  Sister chromatids separate from one another  Sister chromatids move to opposite poles (centrioles)

14 Anaphase Run away, run away!

15 Telophase  Chromosomes uncoil and become invisible (now in form of chromatin)  Spindle disappears  Nuclear envelope  Nucleolus re-appears (Cell prepares to return to interphase state)

16 Cytokinesis  Division into two identical DAUGHTER CELLS  Starts during Telophase  Finishes after Telophase is over
