Qualifications Update: Design and Manufacture Qualifications Update: Design and Manufacture

 New Course  Provides progression from National 5 Design and Manufacture  Develops an increased depth and complexity of knowledge and understanding  Further develops higher order skills  Offers personalisation and choice  Provides flexibility Key messages

Course Structure Two units, internally assessed by centres, externally verified by SQA, Pass/Fail Course assessment consisting of: Assignment, marked by centres, externally verified by SQA (70 marks) Question paper, marked by SQA (70 marks) Both assignment and question paper contribute to final grade

Design and Manufacture Unit Assessment at Higher

Unit assessment - recap Flexible and open Assessment Standards and Evidence Requirements in Units Greater range of techniques and methodologies for assessment – encouraged Assessments can be designed to provide evidence across more than one Outcome or Unit – combined assessments More opportunities to gather naturally occurring evidence – assessment as part of learning and teaching

Unit Assessment Support purpose As at National 4 and 5, Design and Manufacture Assessment Support will be provided, which you can use to: Assess your candidates Any evidence for assessment must be of a type that allows valid judgments to be made against Outcomes and Assessment Standards. There is further guidance on the subject page about candidate evidence types. Adapt for your own assessment programmes and help you develop your own assessments

Unit Assessment Support at Higher – key features Valid from August 2014 Complements and supports learning and teaching Assesses competence against Unit Assessment Standards Provides broad-based tasks to allow assessors to choose appropriate context and forms of evidence Shows range of approaches to generating assessment evidence Gives information on the type of evidence which could be gathered

Unit assessment support packages at Higher - approaches These will be produced in the same order as National 4 and 5 Package 1 Combined approach – groups Outcomes and Assessment Standards from different Units Package 2 Unit by Unit approach – discrete assessment tasks for each Unit Package 3 Portfolio approach – using naturally occurring evidence

Assessment Support Package 1 UASP 1 is a Combined approach It covers all the Assessment Standards from both the Design, and the Materials and Manufacturing Units Provides a set of flexible tasks which can be used as they are, adapted or replaced as needed (maintaining the same rigour and challenge) Key areas in the Support Pack are: Making Assessment Judgement tables – which are mandatory Appendix 1 – Instructions for candidates, task and guidance/support Information on re-assessment Recording documentation

Design and Manufacture Higher Course Assessment

Course Assessment at Higher Course Assessment at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher assesses Added Value For Design and Manufacture there are 2 Components – an Assignment and a Question Paper Courses at Higher are graded A – D, as at present Controlled Assessment of setting, conducting and marking

Higher – Higher – Question Paper Assesses breadth of knowledge from across Course Set by SQA Conducted by centres under controlled conditions Marked by SQA Number of marks – 70 marks (50% of Course Assessment) Time - 2 hours Two sections: Section 1 - 25 marks and a single question divided into sub- questions Section 2 - 45 marks and 5/6 questions – including integration of knowledge and understanding in some questions

Higher – Higher – Assignment Assesses ability to apply skills, knowledge and understanding to respond to a brief / problem / situation Set by SQA Conducted by centres under controlled conditions Marked and internally verified by centres Externally verified by SQA Number of marks – 70 marks (50% of Course Assessment) Bank of assignments provided by SQA Marks awarded for the candidate’s ability to generate ideas, develop and refine ideas, apply various communication techniques, apply knowledge and understanding of design issues and materials and processes
