1 Plot-a-Plot

2 Objectives of the project: Purpose is to provide an “inquiry based” assignment for students that will provide multimedia and other technology experiences. Resources: GPS, Camera, Internet, and additional multi-media resources as determined by the students

3 All students will start out by drawing a sketch of the layout of the cemetery or part of it showing roads and a few of the obvious landmarks such as a large clump of trees, the church, and entrance/exit points. This will be used as a basis for the whole project to be developed around.

7 Language Arts Correlation Students will use the same person previously chosen to do the historical research to make a biographical sketch of that person. Students will then create a Trading Card for that person. back

8 Science Correlation Students will have already completed a lesson using the GPS and many of its key functions before the project is introduced. Students will be given a GPS and begin by recording the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the obvious landmarks and road intersections on the sketch. GPS Students will use the GPS to record the highest and lowest elevations found in the area covered by the sketch map. Click on picture to watch video. back

9 Social Studies Correlation Students will select one of the persons buried in the cemetery. Using the information on the tombstone and the surrounding graves, internet genealogy searches, county history, the clerk of court, and local libraries, students will research the persons background and prominence or role in the community. Students will record their finding on the class forum and compare and contrast their information with that of other students on the forum. 10 Business/vocational correlation Students come up with a business (genealogy tracer company, cartography company, GPS retailer, etc. )related to any of the research completed thus far in the project. Students will write a business plan to market their service/product. back

11 Outcome 1. Students will gain experience using “21 st Century” technologies. (GPS, mapping tools, Google Earth products, internet research tools, etc. 2.Students will increase their abilities to work cooperatively to solve problems that are realistic and useful.
