2 Jackson Loses the 1824 Election Jackson won the popular vote, but those in the congress disliked him. Congress elected John Quincy Adams as president instead. Followers of Jackson left the Republican Party to form the Democratic Republican Party.

3 Voting Rights Expand During Adams’s Presidency Many states eased property requirements for voting. In 1824, 350,000 people voted for the presidency. 3 times that voted in the 1828 election. This helped Andrew Jackson in the 1828 election.

4 Jackson Becomes President With the expansion voting rights, presidential candidates had to be liked by common people. Jackson was extraordinary at this! His followers were called Jacksonians.
