The Nature of Science

Science: A way of knowing about the natural world. – Science is a process and therefore there is constantly changing as new information becomes available. Based on evidence and logic.

The natural world is understandable.

Science demands evidence! There is no single universal step-by-step scientific method However, a number of shared values and perspectives characterize a scientific approach to understanding nature.

Shared values: – explanations supported by empirical evidence that are reproducible – Observations – rational argument – Inference – peer review

Scientific ideas are durable yet subject to change Have confidence in scientific knowledge while realizing that such knowledge may be abandoned or modified in light of new evidence

Science uses a blend of logic and imagination Creativity is a vital, yet personal, ingredient in the production of scientific knowledge.

Science is a social activity Contributions to science can be made and have been made by people around the world.

Scientists attempt to avoid bias Bias= prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. scientists try to remain objective and engage in peer review to help avoid bias.

Scientific knowledge is the product of observation and inference.

Science skills: Observing- to notice something Ex- there are dead fish in the river Inferring- to form a conclusion based on facts and not direct observation Ex- water pollution killed the fish. Predicting- to state in advance why and how something will occur.

Scientific laws and theories are different kinds of scientific knowledge.

Think-Pair-Share What do you think of when you hear the term hypothesis? Theory? Law?

Hypothesis A hypothesis is a tentative explanation that accounts for a set of facts and that can be tested by further investigation. A hypothesis can be supported, modified, or rejected based on collected data.

Theory A theory is an accepted explanation of a large body of information, experimental and inferential, and serves as an overarching framework for numerous concepts. It is subject to change as new evidence becomes available Ex- the sun is the center of the solar system

Law A law is a statement of fact meant to describe, in concise terms, an action. It is generally accepted to be true and universal. Ex: law of gravity
