1 NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES

2 NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

3 Used to make atomic bombs.
NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission splits the nucleus of a Uranium atom to create heat energy. Used to make atomic bombs. A neutron hits & splits the uranium atom, releasing a great amount of energy as heat and radiation. More neutrons are also released. These neutrons go on to bombard other uranium atoms, and the process repeats.

4 COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

5 Non-Renewable Resources
Coal: most abundant but not used as much High cost to mine & impurities cause pollution (acid rain) Wyoming, W.VA, KY, Texas Petroleum/Oil Pumped & refined to separate the gasoline for transportation use. Other parts used for these things: Natural Gas Energy source for heating, cooking, washing/drying Cleanest burning fossil fuel – little pollution How is it made?

6 HOW IS COAL MADE ???

7 HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

8 HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

9 RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

10 Renewable Resources

11 SOLAR The sun is 93 million miles away – is still the primary source of all energy. In the high temps. Of the sun- Hydrogen atoms are fused which releases lots of energy Solar Panels

12 Energy from the Earth shown in geysers.
GEOTHERMAL Energy from the Earth shown in geysers. Generated from the decay of natural, radioactive materials within the earth. Not a popular source of energy – but places like Yellowstone have geysers.

13 WIND Wind is converted into mechanical & electrical energy.
Unpredictable source of energy Wind over 8 mph is used to generate electricity

14 BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter.
As bacteria decomposes organic waste (manure, septic tank sludge, food scrapes, pond-bottom muck, etc.) methane is produced. Same methane as natural gas from the ground. Specially designed power plants are used to produce electricity from burning biomass.

15 WATER or HYDROELECTRIC
Hoover Dam: Colorado River at the Arizona-Nevada border Energy from the flow of water collected behind dams. The water can turn turbines which drive generators & produce electricity. The amount of power generated is determined by the amount of water that falls & the distance it falls.
