3 By the late 1400s the Renaissance had spread to Northern Europe  Population was growing  The plague & the 100 years war had ended  Italy was at war  France attacked southern Italy, forcing artists (& others) to move North  Trade Northern Renaissance centered in Flanders

5 Northern Writers try to reform Society  Christian Humanists were critical of the failure of the Church to inspire people to live a Christian life  Wanted to reform society using education  Promoted schools for both boys & girls Erasmus- Praise of FollySir Thomas More- Utopia Christine de Pizan- The City of Ladies

6 Christian Hmanists:  Erasmus  The Praise of Folly poked fun at greedy merchants, heartsick lovers, quarrelsome scholars, & pompous priests  Believed in a Christianity of the Heart- not of ceremonies or rules  Thought to improve society all people should study the bible  Sir Thomas More  Wrote Utopia about an imaginary land where there was no corruption, no greed, no need for money, no war  Christine de Pizan  Wrote The Book of the City of Ladies & many more  Questioned the different treatment of girls & boys

7 The Renaissance spreads- In England, Renaissance is called the Elizabethan Age (after Queen Elizabeth)

8 Gutenberg Improves the Printing Press  Chinese has invented a system from block printing around 1045 but it was impractical because of the thousands of characters  1440 Johan Gutenberg refined the printing press  Gutenberg Bible was the 1 st full size book printed  Made it possible to produce books FAST & CHEAP  Will increase literacy make more books available make printing cheaper decrease the power of the Church

10 Legacy of the Renaissance Changes in the Arts  Used techniques of Greece & Rome  Portrayed individuals more realistically  Created works that were secula r as well as religious  Writer used vernacular  The arts praised individual achievement Changes in Society  Printing made information more available  Increased desire for learning  Published accounts of discoveries, maps, charts led to further discoveries  Laws were printed  Christian humanists attempted to influence how people lived  People began to question political & Religious practices
