Movement of the Moai By Amanda, Caity, Erin, Gwen, Laura, Lauren, Monica and Morgan

There are many theories of how the Moai statues on Easter Island were moved. There’s the: - They were rolled by logs, turned by levers, and lifted by a man-made pulley. - The Moai walked because of magic - Ropes were pulled on the top and the bottom of the Moai, to make it walk.

The first theory was that the Moai were moved by placing logs in front of each other, and rolled along, adding logs when they were needed. To turn the Moai around, two levers were placed on either side of the Moai that was still laying on logs, and when one side pushed down, and the other up, the Moai was slowly turned 180 .

The last step to getting the Moai in place was by pulling the Moai up by pulley’s. They attached a rope that went from the Moai to a tall pole, and another rope that was attached to the pole and pulled by the people. As the rope was pulled, the Moai started to slowly climbing up, and rocks were place underneath to help with support.

The second theory to the step to the movement of the Moai is that magic moved the Moai. A chief that was endowed with mana, had ordered the statues to walk. The Moai began to walk, and they soon found their place on Rapa Nui.

The final theory to moving the Moai is that ropes were attached to the top and the bottom of the statue. The people would pull the rope on the top of the Moai until it almost fell over, and then pulled on the bottom rope which was attached to the back, to make the Moai spin, and then stand straight. This process made the Moai take a step forward with every pull on the top and the bottom ropes.
