3 Why the south seceded? Mad about how north was dealing with slavery Missouri Compromise –Slavery banned north of Missouri Compromise of 1850 –California wants to become a free state. –Popular Sovereignty for the rest of the states.

5 Underground Railroad System of escape routes that hide escaped slaves and helped them get to the north. Dred Scott Case (1857) –Slaves were nothing more than property and didn’t have northern rights even when they were living in the north.

7 Lincoln is Elected President Wanted to stop the further spread of slavery. Pledged not to interfere with southern slaves or the southern way of life.

11 The War Begins Fort Sumter: –Southern states start capturing Forts and Federal buildings. –Lincoln only sent supplies and the Fort fell to the South. The people then rallied behind the president to go to war!! A great president because he always seemed to wait until just the right moment.

12 Northern v. Southern Generals South had the great generals of the Mexican American War. –Stonewall Jackson –Robert E. Lee –North had Ulysses S. Grant, but the rest of the generals continually failed to take advantage of southern weaknesses.

16 Beginning of the War Northern Generals continually defeated. They lose the boarder state of Missouri. General McClellan continually fails to chase down confederate troops. Allowing them to escape. Lincoln has a hard time finding capable and aggressive generals.

17 Battle of Bull Run “Stonewall” Jackson defeats the Northern troops by refusing to retreat. A surprise victory that showed the north that this war would last longer than 90 days. Lincoln’s response: 1 st income tax, and enlistment increased from 2 months to two years. Some Confederates thought they had won the war!

18 Lincoln concentrates on west. Wants to split the confederacy in two and take the Mississippi River. Ulysses S. Grant: Hired to lead western army. Battle of Shiloh Grant doesn’t give up and wins, but at huge cost to soldiers.

19 Key Battles of the War Antietam –6,000 dead over 20,000 wounded, some men as young as 13! –North won but failed to chase down the retreating Confederate army. –Made Lee look invincible. Emancipation Proclamation: –Stated that all slaves captured by the north would be free. Made the war a war for slavery!! –The so-called victory of Antietam was his opening.

21 The North Takes Charge Gettysburg: –North finally won a battle, 23,000 Union and 28,000 Confederate died. –A battle of attrition. –Made Lee look less invincible, but General Meade still failed to chase him down. Gettysburg Address: –Lincoln tells the American people that we most unite as a unified nation.

23 Battle of Vicksburg One of the Confederates strongholds on the Mississippi river. North destroyed supply lines to Confederate fort and waited until the right moment to attack. Confederates surrendered after food supplies ran so low people were forced to eat dogs and mules.

27 Sherman’s March Total War: Destroy opponent on the home front as well as the battlefield. Across the south to the ocean. Left a path of destruction a mile wide and hundreds of miles long.

29 Surrender at Appomattox North takes southern Capital of Charleston. Lee and Grant meet to negotiate surrender. Grant sent troops home with their possessions and three days rations. The war was over after 4 years of fighting.

30 How the War changed life? More federal authority. Widened gap between North and South. First modern war- last old fashion war. 13 th amendment.

31 Lincoln Assassinated April 14 th, 1865. By John Wilkes Booth a 26 year old southern sympathizer. Booth escaped, but was caught and shot 12 days later. Left the question of how to integrate 4 million newly freed slaves into national life for the next President Johnson.
