2. Egypt’s pyramids are the oldest stone buildings in the world. They were built nearly 5,000 years ago. Sometimes up to 100,000 men worked for 20 seasons on one pyramid! More than 80 pyramids are still standing. A pyramid is a triangular tomb full of smaller tombs. Inside their once-limestone-smooth surfaces there are secret passageways, ramps, hidden rooms, and shafts. The average weight of one stone block weighed 15 tons. That is as much as 5 elephants.

Large flat high topped tombs were called Mastabas Early Egyptians buried their dead under a pile of rocks. 3000 B.C.- Mastaba tombs are made of sun baked mud bricks, which gave protection to the dead from harmful weather. 2700 B.C.-Imhotep(one of their gods Im-o-tep) invented the step pyramid, pyramid of six steps. Around 2500 B.C, the Great Pyramid Of Giza was built. It is 480 ft. high and covers around 13 acres of land. 1500 B.C.-the Valley Of Kings contains the tombs of many later pharaohs.

4. Two kinds of rock were used to build the pyramids in Egypt: Limestone and small amounts of Granite. These rocks were mined close to the banks of the Nile River so that they could be easily transported to the boats.

5. Ancient Egyptians used similar tools to what have today like: chisels, a mallet, a drill, and a saw. No blueprints have ever been found for the construction of any pyramid, but archaeologists use intelligent guesses on how ancient Egyptians built the pyramids.

6. The pyramids job is to protect and preserve the body. To preserve the body a process known as mummification was held: Mummification lasted up to 70 days. 1) Brain was removed through the nose. 2) Vital organs were taken out and put in tightly sealed jars. 3) Then the body was dried out for about 40 days. 4) The body was treated with scented oils. 5) The body was wrapped in linen bandages Jars held the liver, lungs, stomach, and intestines. Ancient Egyptians threw away the brain of the dead person’s body because they did not know what it was. A lizard or mouse were often found wrapped within the mummies body. Mummies of cats, dogs, crocodiles, and birds have also been found.

7. King Tut became king at the age of 9 yrs. old and died ten years later at the age of 19. many of the artifacts in his tomb were made of solid gold, such as his casket. King Tut’s casket was made from 2,500 pounds of solid gold. His casket is worth $13,000,000 today.

8.  If you tried to walk the desert on foot, you would need 4-6 gallons of water per day. The more water you carry, the more water you need.  Ancient Egyptians thought oxen and other beasts were considered to valuable for the heavy work of building pyramids.  Men wore kilts, or T- shirts. Women wore shawls and ankle length dresses. And children did not wear any clothes AT ALL!
