2 Introduction: What is NECAP?  The New England Common Assessment Program is the result of a collaboration among New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine to build a set of assessments for grades 3-8 and 11 in order to meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind. NECAP assesses reading and math in grades 3-8 and 11, writing in grades 5, 8, and 11, and science in grades 4, 8 & 11. 2

3 What does NECAP measure? Math (grades 3-8 & 11) – Number and Operations – Geometry and Measurement – Functions and Algebra – Data, Statistics and Probability Writing (grades 5, 8, & 11) – Structure of Language and Writing Conventions – Short Responses – Extended Response Reading (grades 3-8 & 11) - Word ID/Vocabulary - Level of Reading Comprehension: Initial Understanding and Analysis and Interpretation - Type of text: Literary and Informational Science (grades 4, 8 & 11) - Physical Science - Earth Space Science - Life Science - Inquiry NECAP test items are aligned to the Vermont Grade Expectations and are designed to measure student performance in the following ‘strands.’ 3

32 Focus on NEASC Two-Year Plan Consistent Curriculum Pre-K-12: vertical alignment and non- negotiables at each grade level -Steering committees: Curriculum Council, Math, Literacy, Social, Social Studies, Science -WCSU In-service time for teachers to meet pk-12 -Extensive work w/ Math consultant to develop non- negotiables U-32 Horizontal alignment: consistency across sections and courses, common assessments 32

33 Focus on NEASC Two-Year Plan Collaborative Professional Development Common planning time for all common courses In-Service Days Faculty CIA time: 2 meetings a month after school Focus on differentiated instruction, formative assessments, and unit planning (UbD) Department Heads as Curriculum Leaders 33

34 Focus on NEASC Two-Year Plan Data Collection and Application – Move beyond the current annual comprehensive assessment – District goal: develop comprehensive data collection system (diagnostic tools, formative and common assessments at the local level) Assessments are being developed or have been piloted. Training on developing assessments – Interventions systems based on data – revamp MTSS/EST Staffings based on academic performance New schedule with dedicated daily time for intervention, extension across the school 34
