Intro for Legal Professionals Personal Planning Registry

Benefits of the Personal Planning Registry  Secure, centralized storage of a client’s important information and documents – with 24/7 access.  Unlike the Wills Registry, which is used after death, the Personal Planning Registry is for while you are alive – when time matters!  Don’t take on the risk and responsibility of being a repository for your clients’ time-sensitive documents.  Family and friends can search the Registry even if they don’t know what legal professional Mom might have gone to.

Fees for registration  Fees are charged only for registering documents – not for access. There is no fee for your clients (Account Holders) to update contact information, view their own record or share read- only access with others. There is no fee for public institutions to search.

Fees  Legal professionals can be authorized as Registration Agents.  Registration Agents receive a 20% discount on fees. Agent fees are $20.00 to register the first document (and create a Registry account for the client) and $8.00 for each additional registration – per client. Firms/Agents can charge clients for their time to register documents – according to the rules of your governing body. Nidus Registry fees are GST exempt. Agents do not pay online, Nidus invoices for transactions.

Did you know? Evolution of the Personal Planning Registry

Legislative history of the Registry  The Representation Agreement Act was passed in 1993 and included provisions for a mandatory registry.  The government did not proclaim the registry provisions in 2000 with the rest of the legislation. The provisions were repealed in 2006.

Innovation and public support  The public continued to ask for a Registry – for communication purposes, not government scrutiny.  Nidus set up the first version of the Registry in 2002 as an online service, in partnership with Juricert (Law Society of BC) and a software company in Victoria.  Nidus launched a new online system in June 2014.
