Introduction to Networks Mr. Grimming

Types of Networks Wide Area Network (WAN) Cover large geographic area Nodes connected by coaxial cable, microwave relay networks, satellites, and fiber optic cable High speed interconnections to support Internet backbone Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Usually cover a city or town Include cable TV systems and telephone systems Interface between local and long distance networks

Types of Networks Local Area Network (LAN) Primarily for small number of users Usually for single entity such as company, building, house, etc. Personal Area Network (PAN) Short range networks that connect a limited number of devices Connections are usually automatic No extra equipment is needed (ad hoc)

Types of Networks Storage Area Network (SAN) Very condense site with storage terminals only Storage is arrayed in redundancy to prevent loss Very high speed connections are used between terminals

Network Topologies Star Topology Centrally located server to control PCs All communications pass through server Extremely simple to implement New nodes can be added quickly Dependent on reliability of server Speed is restricted by server

Network Topologies Ring Topology Computers connected in a ring Data passed one way around the ring Data is amplified and regenerated at each node New nodes can be added fairly simply Node failure will cause network failure Very slow data transfer rates

Network Topologies Bus Uses a common cable shared by all nodes Only one node can send at a time Can send to another node or broadcast to all nodes Faster than ring and star Wiring is simple and easy to expand

Network Topologies Other Types Daisy chain Tree

Network Configuration Client-Server The server runs the LAN and determines how the system operates Manages printing operations and controls access to other services Peer-to-Peer PC are equal and either can serve as a client or server Smaller and less expensive Simple setup but lower performance Security issues

LAN Hardware
