4 Learning in our class looks like… A Positive Environment We aim to create a positive environment in which children feel safe to be themselves. We celebrate each child for who they are and through a nurturing setting, give them freedom to develop their own identities and learn in a way that best suits them. Learning through Play Our children love the many play sessions we have timetabled into our day. Play is an important part of a child’s development and can help children to grow cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically.

5 Practical Activities Independence We aim to make each of our learning sessions fun and interactive for the children. During the week, the children experience a range of adult led activities such as… In order to help our children get ready for the big wide world, we encourage them to be as independent as possible at school. The children also have their own daily workboxes which include activities tailored to their individual targets. Maths Sensory Stories Forest School Write Dance Music Art Messy Play Cooking We empower the children to think for themselves and make their own choices in order to get their needs and desires met.

6 Life Skills We teach the children important life skills such as road safety, by going out in to the local community. Last year we visited… Being Out and About in the Local Community We incorporate many different life skills sessions into our curriculum such as ‘wash up and brush up’, a session teaching children about self hygiene. We also run breakfast and cooking sessions in which the children are encouraged to take part as independently as possible to get them ready for life after school. 7 Communication Social Skills We use many approaches to encourage communication skills in Kingfisher Class such as… We learn lots from others around us so we encourage our children to interact with their peers as much as possible. Learning through play sessions allow the children lots of time to develop their social skills as well as adult supported social skill sessions throughout the week. Singing PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) Makaton Signing Singing and rhymes Modelling good use of spoken language
