Helping ensure that GMMP 2009/10 is the most successful GMMP to date! William Bird Media Monitoring and gender!! The joy! The power! The how-to!

The GMMP studies four sets of indicators of gender in news media: Representation and voice of women and men as news subjects News delivery – characteristics and responsibilities of journalists and reporters News content – gender stereotyping and gender inequality in news Journalistic practice – reinforcing or challenging stereotypes. GMMP: The Global Media Monitoring Project

Spotlight on inequality in media portrayal & representation of gender. How media houses cover news, rights of women & men, and equality. Media awareness: Media have capability to shape opinions and attitudes. Can reinforce or challenge gender and other stereotypes. Advocacy: impact policy and social change. Provide factual data which activists can use to lobby for more gender- sensitive communication policy and coverage Develop media monitoring skills for gender activists on an international level Why are we doing this?

Decision-making in newsrooms: We need to look at the power relationship between women and men not only portrayal/representation of women. Power of news is that it has TRUTH value – News is so important because it has authority especially when we see where and how women portrayed. We need to unpack this. Change perception - Media can act as catalysts for social change through coverage of injustices and the inclusion of the voice of those who often find their voices marginalized Why are we doing this?

Gender – what do we mean by this? Gender is the way in which society assigns characteristics and social roles to women and men. The roles, functions and characteristics of men have been given greater value than that of women, creating unequal gender power relations which perpetuate discrimination against women. Sex (the biological difference between women and men) becomes the basis for discrimination and the violation of the rights of women and girls in all societies. Why are we doing this?

Media– what do we mean by this? The form of media that reaches large audiences daily is what is known as mainstream or mass media. Media can be owned and operated by the state, the public or private interests. GMMP 2009/2010 media monitoring: Newspaper Radio Television Internet news Why are we doing this?

“We are delighted to be part of this historic event” Chinese monitoring group “I can’t believe I am having so much fun here in Kenya participating, knowing that people are out there doing the same thing.” Kenyan GMMP participant “The work has already been worthwhile for us.
