How are other organisms classified? SCIENCE CH. 1 L. 4 NOTES PG. 22 - 25

For each slide write a question or interesting fact about the information or picture in the slide.

Qualities of Plants  Use sunlight, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and Water (H 2 O) to make own food  Are multicellular  Many have stems, leaves, and roots  Many are vascular

Mosses  A single moss plant is very small  Has very tiny leaf structures  Has no flowers or seeds  Use spores to reproduce Characteristics of Mosses VascularNo SeedsNo FlowersNo

Ferns Characteristics of Ferns VascularYes SeedsNo FlowersNo  Vascular  Have tubes that carry materials to all parts of plant  Feather-like leaves  Young ferns have leaves called fiddleheads  Reproduce using spores

Conifers  Includes pines, firs, and spruces  Needles are the leaves  Is vascular  Uses cones and seeds to reproduce Characteristics of Conifers VascularYes SeedsYes FlowersNo

Flowering Plants Characteristics of Flowering Plants VascularYes SeedsYes FlowersYes  About 230,000 species have been identified  All are vascular  Use flowers to make seeds

Neither Plant nor Animal  New organisms that were discovered didn’t fit well as plants or animals  (Example: some moved, but performed photosynthesis)  Many were one cell  Some were one cell but lived in a group of cells in a colony

Neither Plant Nor Animal  Some cause disease, some are harmless, some are even helpful  Many have similarities to plants and animals  All need an environment for food, water, and waste removal.  Many need carbon dioxide or oxygen

Fungi Kingdom  Not plants because they can’t make their own food  Mushrooms use hair-like structures to absorb and digest food from material they grow on  Bakers use them for bread  Yeast takes in sugar from bread and releases carbon dioxide to make bread rise

Protist Kingdom  Most are single cells  Some (like algae) live in colonies  Some live in digestive systems of animals  Cows and termites  Help digest food  Animals would die without these protists

Eubacteria Kingdom  Single cells  Many shapes and sizes  Spheres  Rods  Spirals  Some have tails  Do not have a true nucleus

Archaebacteria Kingdom  Single cells  Survive in environments that are deadly for other organisms  Very hot or acidic water  Very salty water  Do not have a true nucleus
