1 Our Class Groups Flexible Grouping Assignment, McDaniel College, By Melissa Glass-Riolo, 2011

2 Name Card Each student will have a name card on their seat. Each name card will have a picture and a number. The cards will be different colors. Name 1 2 3 54

3 Grouping We will use the pictures, numbers and colors to help us form groups. Sometimes we will group by colors. Sometimes we will group by numbers. Sometimes we will group by pictures. Groups will meet in different areas of the room based on their color, numbers, or pictures.

7 Group Expectations When the teacher instructs your color, number or picture group, you will quietly move to that location. While working with your group members, you will remain on task, following all classroom expectations. Each group member will have an assigned role & must participate in the given task.

8 Group Member Roles Each group member will select or be assigned a role. The possible roles include: Note-taker- this person will take notes Speaker- this person will share ideas with the class Time-keeper- this person will keep track of time, make sure the group is on task Discussion director- this person will lead the group in discussing and completing the assignment Question facilitator- this person will keep track of any questions the group has and ask the teacher as necessary

9 Purpose of Groups By working in different groups, students will gain a better understanding of assignments, develop positive relationships with classmates and become more active learners. By working in groups based on learning preferences and abilities, the teacher will be able to create more rigorous lessons and activities that better meet students’ needs.
