2 How did political, economic, and social conflicts result in the independence of South Sudan? South Sudan became an independent country on July 9, 2011. There are three main factors that led to South Sudan’s independence- Social, political, and economic conflicts

5  When Sudan became independent from Britain in 1956, the existing colonial borders did not take into account the various ethnic and religious groups  North- mostly Arab Muslims  South- numerous ethnic groups who follow traditional religions and some Christianity

6  South felt they were discriminated because government was based in city of Khartoum

7  Southerners were angered at attempts to impose Islamic law on the whole country  Civil war had been going on between North and South for most of its history 22 years of fighting have led to the deaths of 1.5million and over 4 million displaced people(refugees)
