1 Welcome This is my e-portfolio on Introduction to Engineering Design. I am a student at Doshi STEM Institute in Syosset, New York. ______________________________________________________________ Charles Stem Student About Me and IED Table of Contents Curriculum Work

2 About Me:I am a student at the Doshi STEM Institute with a passion for science, specifically my interests are in computer science and engineering. In my free time I enjoy reading and playing video games as well as participating in many clubs from robotics to model UN. About IED:This PLTW course develops student problem-solving skills using a design development process. Models of product solutions are created, analyzed, and communicated using solid modeling computer software. IED is an exciting entry-level engineering design course, which encourages hands on participation in exploring various forms of communication. Students will learn design fundamentals and problem solving skills in individual and group settings. They will create a portfolio including sketches, renderings, and 3D CAD models. Inventor software is used for visualizing 3D CAD models. This course strongly recommended for students exploring design, engineering, architecture, technical, construction, manufacturing, and graphic design careers.

5 Sketching Warm Up Description: One of the first things we did in the course. We had to copy several patterns and shapes as well as shade them. What Was Learned: This helped me learn how to properly use the grid paper to aid in sketching. Reflection: My shading needed much improvement and I needed to thicken my lines to make them more legible.

6 What is This? Activity 1.7 Description: I had to describe what the invention was a pitch it to a seller based only on a picture of it. What Was Learned: I learned how to do a sales pitch for an invention and how to better interpret the use of an invention. Reflection: I feel that next time I make a sales pitch I should talk more about the price of the product.

7 Activity 1.9 Design Innovation Description: In this project we were doing research to look into the history and improvements made to bullet proof glass. What Was Learned: I learned about the materials used to make bullet proof glass and how inventions change over time. I also learned how to read patent documentation. Reflection: My hand writing could be more legible here and I could have looked for more patents.

8 Isometric Sketching Description: This is a series of isometric sketches and notes on isometric paper. These shapes were hand drawn copies of a given set of shapes. They also have tonal sketching. What Was Learned: I learned how to make a accurate isometric sketch and how to do tonal shading to that sketch. Also how to make these sketches to scale. Reflection: I should definitely draw my shapes darker to make them more readable.

9 Perspective Sketching Description: This shows multiple sketches of shapes don’t using one, two, and three point perspective. What Was Learned: I learned how to do one, two, and three point perspective from this. Reflection: I should have darkened my lines to make them more legible.

10 Multiview Sketching Description: To do Multiview sketching you take and isometric shape and separate it into the top side and front view. This is a set of practice shapes for that. What Was Learned: I learned how to properly identify the front of an object. I also learned how the placement of faces changes as you look at an object from other views. Reflection: Should have darkened my lines to make them more legible.

11 US and Metric Measurements/Unit Conversions Description: This is a conversion chart and several practice questions for measurement. What Was Learned: I learned to measure one unit beyond what the ruler displayed and how to convert from metric to US. Reflection: Possibly could have been more accurate in my measurements.

12 Dial Calipers Description: These are pictures of measurements done by a dial caliper that must then be interpreted and recorded by the student. What Was Learned: With this I learned how to measure correctly with a dial caliper to one decimal place beyond what is given. Reflection: To improve on my accuracy I will have to continue to use the dial caliper and get more experience.
