4. A. The First President 1. In 1788, the Electoral College unanimously elected George Washington; John Adams finished second and became Vice President 2. The nation was divided on many issues, and GW was well aware that everything he did would establish a precedent for future presidents 3. The first job of the President and Congress was to organize the government

5. B. The Executive Branch 1. Congress created several departments to advise the President: Treasury- Alexander Hamilton Treasury- Alexander Hamilton State- Thomas Jefferson State- Thomas Jefferson War- Henry Knox War- Henry Knox 2. The heads of these departments were known as the president’s Cabinet 3. GW also appointed an Attorney General (Edmund Randolph) to advise on legal matters
