3 Electricity the flow of electrical current Electrical Circuit something that provides a path for electricity

4 Circuit is always a circular path.

5 Switch A device that will safely break or complete a circuit path. – When the switch is on the circuit path is complete. –When a switch is off the circuit path is incomplete and the electricity does not flow.

6 Electrical Symbols are used to make circuit path diagrams easier to read. Draw these in your notebook!!!

9 Open circuit is a circuit that has a break in it. –‘turned off.’ Closed circuit has no breaks. –‘turned on.’ Notice which circuit path has their lights ON and which circuit path has their lights OFF. Why do you think this is so….?

11 UNITS measured in coulombs. There are parts of atoms that cause charges. –Protons are positive(+) –Electrons are negative( - ) –Neutrons cause no charge.

12 Series Circuit Has only one path for electricity to flow If any part of the circuit is broken, then the all lights will go off. Ex’s: Christmas tree lights In a series circuit, the light bulbs are DEPENDENT of each other. It is like adding pinches to a hose. Draw this Circuit In your Notes!!!

13 Parallel Circuit Has multiple paths for electricity to flow If any part of the circuit is broken, the remaining lights will stay on. Ex’s: your home!! In parallel circuits, the light bulbs are INDEPENDENT of each other. They have no effect on each other. Draw this Circuit In your Notes!!!

14 Short circuits Are very dangerous because they creates a huge amount of current Circuit breakers and fuses are safety devices that prevent too much current from flowing inside wires. If too much current flows the wires will melt and a fire will start! Some reasons for short circuits: Broken or damaged wires charging a car battery the wrong way
