Chapter 1, section 2 Classification / Properties / Changes *Write all bold definitions from the textbook. Fill in the graphic organizer with types of matter.

 Matter ◦ Mixtures  Homogeneous (same phase = solution)  Heterogeneous ◦ Pure Substances  Elements  Compounds

 Extensive ◦ Definition ◦ Examples  Intensive ◦ Definition ◦ Examples  Physical ◦ Definition ◦ Examples  Chemical ◦ Definition ◦ Examples Match the following examples to the correct property: Volume Mass Energy Melting point Boiling point Density Conduct electricity Ability to burn Ability to rust

 Density = mass divided by volume (D = m/v)  Units: Mass (g), Volume (cm 3 or mL), Density (g/mL)

 The mass of a sample of lead is 150.00 g. The volume is 5.0 cm 3. What is its density?  You’ve obtained a new sample of lead that has a volume of 2.0 cm 3. What is the mass of this sample?  The density of calcium is 2.8 g/cm 3. If you have measured out 15.55 g, what is the volume?

 Complete the worksheet with a partner.  Due by the end of class.

 Physical changes ◦ A change that does not involve the change in identity of a substance.  Example: grinding, cutting, crushing  Changes of state (solid to liquid to gas and back)  Chemical changes ◦ A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances.  Examples: burning, rusting, tarnishing  SAME AS CHEMICAL REACTIONS – reactants yield products  Composition, decomposition, single and double replacement, combustion, neutralization

 How is energy involved in physical and chemical changes? ◦ Heat ◦ Light ◦ Conservation
