Compounds / Mixtures

Compounds A compound is composed of two or more elements that are chemically combined. CompoundElements combined SugarCarbon, hydrogen and oxygen Carbon dioxideCarbon and oxygen

Mixture Combination of 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined. Substances keep their identities. Can be physically separated. Components do not have a definite ratio. Examples Pizza, Saltwater

Mixtures Versus Compounds MixturesCompounds Components are elements, compounds, or both. Components are elements. Components keep their original properties. Components lose their original properties. Mixtures can be separated by physical means. Compounds can be separated by chemical means. Mixtures are formed using any ratio of components. Compounds are formed using a set mass ratio of components.

Concentration Concentration is the measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent. The solute is what is dissolved in a substance A solvent is a liquid that dissolves the solute. Water is the universal solvent.

Solutions Solutions can be described as Concentrated Diluted Solubility is the amt of solute needed to make a saturated solution using a given amt of solvent at a certain temp. Solutions maybe saturated or unsaturated.

Dissolving Solids 3 ways to quickly dissolve solids Mixing Heating Crushing See page 51 figure 16.

Suspensions A mixture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas, but the particles are large enough they settle out. Example = muddy water Suspensions can be separated by using a filter.

Colloids Mixture with properties of both a suspension and a solution. Particles are dispersed throughout. Are not heavy enough to settle out. Examples = Milk, Jello, Deodorent, whipped cream, mayonnaise.
