1 Compounds and Mixtures
EQ: Can I classify common substances as elements or compounds based on their symbols or formulas? SPI

2 Ever Heard of Chemical Bonding??
HINT: Oxygen and Hydrogen undergo chemical bonding in order to become water!

3 Chemical bonding is the joining of atoms to form new substances.
The properties of these new substances are different than the properties of the original elements. Example: H2O

4 For example, atoms of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen combine in different patterns to form sugar and water. C6H12O6 H2O

5

6 When chemical bonds form, electrons are shared, gained, or lost.

7 Foldable

8 What’s an element again??
Element: One or more of the same atoms NOT bonded together.

9 Examples of Elements: Gold: Au Oxygen: O Silver: Ag Aluminum: Al

10 Remember that elements will be written with only ONE or TWO letters!!
Au Ag Hg O Cl He N Al Na Mg H C B

11 What’s a Compound? Compound: A pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically bonded together.

12 Examples of compounds:
Carbon Dioxide: CO2 Water: H2O

13 Elements combine by reacting (undergoing a chemical change).

14

15 What’s a Mixture? MIXTURE: A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded. No chemical change happens when a mixture is made! Most natural substances are mixtures.

16 Examples of Mixtures: Tossed salad A bowl of cereal Oil and vinegar

17 Pizza Trail Mix Halloween Candy

18 Mixtures can be separated!

19 To Leave Class… 1. A (n) ______________ is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Compound Element Atom Mixture

20 2. Which of the following best describes chicken noodle soup?
Element Mixture Compound Solution

21 3. Which of the following statements best describes elements?
All of the particles in the same element are different. Elements can be broken down into simpler substances. Elements have unique sets of properties. Elements cannot be joined together in chemical reactions.

22 4. Hydrogen (chemical symbol H) is a (n)
Compound Mixture Element Electron

23 5. Two different atoms are chemically combined to form a new substance
5. Two different atoms are chemically combined to form a new substance. What kind of substance formed? A compound An element A mixture A solute
