2 Aims listen, talk, read and write, as appropriate to purpose, audience and context. understand, analyse and evaluate texts, including Scottish texts, as appropriate to purpose and audience in the contexts of literature, language and media. apply knowledge and understanding of language.

3 Outcomes 2.1 Identifying and explain the purpose and audience, as appropriate to genre 2.2Identifying and explaining the main ideas and supporting details 2.3Applying knowledge and understanding of language to explain meaning and effect in depth and detail, using appropriate critical terminology

4 Skills Understanding – what is being said? Analysis – how is it being said? (language/techniques) Evaluation – how effective has the speaker been in conveying their message/opinion?

5 Identify the purpose – why has the clip been made? the intended audience – who was the clip made for? the main ideas – detailed bullet points the supporting details – evidence from the clip You will also need to be able to comment on the effect of language features used.

6 Before you listen: Who is speaking? If you know who is speaking, what do you already know about them? Identify the topic – what sort of ideas would you expect to hear? Do you know anything already about the topic?

7 During listening: Are the participants saying what you expected? Is there anything you don’t understand?

8 After you’ve listened: What were the main points? Can you summarise the main points? Did you stay interested as you were listening? Why were you interested or not interested? Can you tell someone else about what you heard and discuss it with them? What did they think?

9 Purpose Inform Entertain Persuade/argue Describe Explain Advise Promote Some clips may have more than one purpose. For example, to inform and to entertain.

10 Audience Age range, e.g. 16- 30 Nationality/ nationalities Gender Interests Social class You should be able to justify your conclusions by referring to the clip or specific evidence.

11 Features of Language Tone Register (formal/informal language) Repetition Onomatopoeia Metaphors Similes Dialect Slang Word Choice (emotive) Alliteration Identify as many of these techniques as you can in the clips you’re shown. What’s been used and why? What effect does it have on the way the speaker delivers their message?

12 Gathering Evidence Write down key phrases – don’t try and write down everything that’s said. Paraphrase if you need to, but you’ll get to listen to the clip a few times. Take as many notes as you can during the practice, so that you can focus on answering the questions during the assessment.

14 Practice Purpose Audience

15 Key Content Detailed bullet points to show the conclusions you’ve drawn from listening to the clip, as well as being able to justify by referring closely to the clip. Some questions may ask for your own words and interpretation, but others rely on you to support your answers with detailed evidence. Listen carefully for key phrases that will support your points about the main ideas of the clip.
